Atlas F1 is a great hotspot for F1 conspiracy theories… but this one caught my eye. The 2007 Bridgestone spec tire is based on the 2004 spec tire… a year in which Ferrari dominated the entire field. Ferrari went a slightly different route than the other teams, opting for a longer wheelbase and more rear bias in its weight distribution.

What we do know is this… Bridgestone based their 2007 tire on an earlier version of their tire (pre 2006). Reasoning behind this was that there was so much competition that tire stability was compromised for better performance last 2 years due to competition from Michellin. Bridgestone and Ferrari are pretty much married prior to 2007… they designed their tires around Ferrari data year after year. Ferrari gave ALL their tire testing data to Bridgestone in prior seasons to help each other gain more understanding of their tires. So going to a 2004 spec tire is entirely plausable.

Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella predicts that it will be tough to duplicate the success of 2006 at Renault. Ferrari and McLaren, the fastest teams in pre-seaon testing, is in a class of their own as shown in this year’s winter development.

“Ferrari and McLaren are a step forward at the moment,” Fisichella told the Australian Herald Sun newpaper. “McLaren and Ferrari are stronger than us. It’s at least half a second a lap. It’s a lot.”

The team expects to gain a bit of ground on the leaders in the season opener with minor aero updates to the Renault R27. Of course with testing over, they won’t be able to evaluate the pieces until Friday practice. When asked what he thought was missing, Fisichella added, “We are struggling to drive the car. The grip overall is not great. So… probably it is downforce.”

At Scuderia Ferrari, everyone is surprised that Felipe Massa has outpaced ex-McLaren pilot Kimi Raikkonen. “Let’s see what happens in Melbourne,” Raikkonen told reporters. “I think that will be the right place to compare us.”

Of course, as history has shown, Kimi is usually a bit reserved during winter testing, and shines once the race season starts, making it tough to gauge his performance against his teammate until the season opener.

In other news, top drivers claim that there will be even LESS overtaking this year. It looks like with the rev limit regulated to 19,000rpms this year, the entire field is only 20hp apart from each other, making the ability to pass based on aerodynamic performance and not engine performance. This may make the racing a bit more interesting IMO, as the fastest cars might not be the best behind dirty air, which means they could be impeded by cars that are slower, yet more efficient behind others.
